QSC Aspiring Interview: CHLOEJET on The Voice & new single ‘Timeline’

Star of The Voice 2024 CHLOEJET’s music career is taking flight before our eyes. Her starkly contemporary sound, blending pop, modern R&B, and elements of trap music has yielded big singles including Why and Used To You Pt.2. Beyond music, she’s not afraid to speak out about her passions, including animal rights, and her experience in the reality music television machine. CHLOEJET speaks to Headliner about surviving as a London artist, why a trip to the cinema inspired her to pursue music and her latest single Timeline.

How is life in London?

It’s good, thank you! I’m at home in my little studio booth that my friend built for me. I earn my living singing around London at hotels and member clubs, and then I do my own gigs as an artist as well. I'm vegan, and I love it. London is such a great city to be vegan. I love animals, I love the environment, and I'm just happy to be here, to be honest. And I absolutely adore music, I can't wait until my career takes off.

How is London specifically as an independent artist?

Well, as a musician, a freelancer and self-employed, every month is different. You just don't know what to expect. To be honest, things were quite quiet in November regarding gigs, and that allowed me to work a lot on myself and my music. I just released a song on the seventh of November [Timeline], and that is doing okay. I'm trying to push out more. I'm currently solo. I don't have any management or a team, so everything is falling onto me. So it's been difficult, but again, I'm grateful. The last few months have been great, and I'm just happy to be here.

You have to have a lot of stamina and a lot of bravery to be an independent singer-songwriter, musician or any avenue in the music industry.

A lot of independent musicians will tell you there are good days and bad days. How do you keep going and positive along your journey?

The first thing I'll say is that it's very difficult. It's not fun. You have to have a lot of stamina and a lot of bravery to be an independent singer-songwriter, musician or any avenue in the music industry. It's a challenge. But the one thing I always say is to believe in yourself, and it can be hard to find that belief in yourself. It took a couple years to be like, ‘Yeah, I'm good. I've got this, I believe in myself’. If you believe in yourself, others will believe in you, and you will get somewhere.

I'm just happy to do anything I can in the industry to try and get somewhere. I love the music industry, regardless of all the horrible things you hear, you just have to really stick to your guns, to yourself, and don't let anyone you know take charge, and just keep going.

Huge congratulations for being a contestant on The Voice in 2024! That must have been a lot and a big experience — what can you share about that?

You need to be able to accept rejection to go on that show! The only reason I was able to do so is because I've been let down so many times by people, which you'll find in the music industry. People say things and they don't tell the truth, and then it's like they've disappeared. I also find it interesting that it’s called The Voice, but to be honest, it's not all about the voice. It's about who the judge is. Like, who are they feeling? And there are five people. If you think about it, there are going to be so many people in this world that aren’t going to like my music or my voice, so it’s going to be really difficult to get one of them to feel my vibe, or like my energy or like my song. There were some phenomenal singers that just didn't get through because the coaches weren't feeling the song. But it doesn't mean they didn't have a good voice.

Before the dizzying heights of being on a major television singing competition, can you remember moments in years gone by when you realised you wanted to pursue music?

There was a small group of people in my year at school who were doing music, and we started using Cubase. Then I started to do musicals in school, and eventually I went to music college. I released my first song when I was 16 — it was awful! I went through a big phase in college where I felt like I didn't know what I'm doing, who I was as an artist, but I just decided to keep singing and singing.

Then I went to see the film Bohemian Rhapsody, the Queen film. I sat in that cinema, and I was just blown away by their artistry. And I was like, ‘Chloe, what are you doing? You are literally the same as every other artist out there, and you're not even that good. You need to do something if you want to do this’. Because I thought about how Queen were so different, so creative, and they wanted every moment of it. Then COVID hit, and I was singing every single day, releasing content every day, doing the remakes to the silly Tiktok songs.

Congratulations on the release of your latest single Timeline! First of all, it looks like you had a lot of fun creating the green screen visuals for the song?

I went to a studio that had a green screen, and I got my friend to be my fake boyfriend.

We kept running against the green screen, like he was chasing after me, because the song is about how I don't want to be with this person anymore. And suddenly, now that you've left, he wants you, but now he’s super keen. So we added these really stupid green screen backgrounds, like, we're running across a farm and running on the streets and it deliberately looks so funny.

I started with the song by playing around with Splice and doing the initial writing. Then I reached out to a producer who a friend of mine worked with — I’d checked out his earlier repertoire and was so impressed. And he executed the song for me. Long story short, I produced a bit of the song early on, and then he made it sound ten times better.

I find it interesting that it’s called The Voice, but to be honest, it's not all about the voice.

What does the phrase Play Out Loud mean to you?

Immediately, what it means to me is to switch yourself off from the world for one second. Shut off all reality. Just pick one song to play so loud and forget everything. Get in your zone, feel free and just play the music and lose yourself. Because I love doing that. And being by myself, shut off from everyone and listening to either my song or one song, just to play out loud and lose myself in it. I also love to just freely dance around like an idiot. So just be yourself for a moment while no one is around, and just take in whatever you want to listen to and enjoy it. Because, unfortunately, the world isn't the greatest place. And if you can have that one joyous moment, take it and play out loud!

What can we expect from you in 2025?

Firstly, I’m easy to find because thankfully no one else uses CHLOEJET as an artist name! I’m on all socials and you can find me doing gigs around London. I do have a really, really strong song coming out in the first part of the year, so watch out for that.
