First Impressions

Switching the SM5s on for the first time, they made a strong initial impression. Even without calibration or adjustment, they delivered a clean, crisp and immersive sound, well beyond what you might expect at this price point.

In fact, straight out of the box, they felt natural and unprocessed, drawing you into the music immediately. I noted that even basic streaming sources such as Apple Music were presented with surprising depth and realism.

Compared to many rivals, these monitors compete with speakers not only in overall tonal balance, but also in terms of soundstage, clarity, and fatigue-free listening.

Smart Room Tuning

A particular strength of the SM5 is its approach to room tuning. The onboard DSP-based boundary EQ offers a selection of rear-panel switches for tailoring performance based on speaker placement - against a wall, on a desk, and so on.

One thing that stood out is just how immediately audible each change is – which is not always the case with less expensive monitors. This makes tuning both fast and intuitive, and means you can dial in adjustments with real confidence.

One of the SM5’s most impressive design elements is its coincident driver – again, not something you often find at this price point.

The mid and high frequencies are reproduced from the same point source, ensuring excellent time alignment and phase coherence; and the real-world result is an immersive and highly believable soundstage, with very impressive stereo imaging. Instruments lock into place naturally, and the sound remains cohesive across the entire field – even when you move slightly out of the sweet spot. 

This approach also helps reduce the amount of processing required, contributing to the SM5’s ‘unprocessed’ and natural character, which became very noticeable over long listening sessions.

Honest Translation

Another standout strength is the SM5’s low distortion performance. Even at higher levels, these speakers hold their clarity remarkably well — with tight bass, clear mids, and a refined top end that doesn’t fatigue.

It’s easy to work on these monitors for extended periods, and they present mixes in a way that’s both musical and technically honest which, for me, makes them a strong option not only for music production and mixing, but also for long editing or composing sessions where comfort really matters.

The build quality is solid, also – with a neat matte finish and a front-ported cabinet, which helps with room positioning when space is tight.

Connectivity includes balanced XLR, TRS, and RCA inputs, and the only slight oddity is the choice of BNC for the AES input, which is relatively uncommon in this application — though unlikely to be a dealbreaker for most users.

Taking everything into account, the SM5 delivers genuine value for money. 

The combination of professional-grade transparency, flexible room tuning, and immersive imaging makes it a no-brainer for anyone upgrading from basic nearfields – or building a serious home studio on a realistic budget: it delivers clear, honest sound, and immersive depth, while encouraging best practices for studio setup.
