Warner Music and Repsol collaborate to decarbonise Spanish music industry

Warner Music Spain has signed an agreement with global energy company Repsol to help decarbonise the music industry in Spain.

Warner Music is the first record label in the country to use Repsol's wide range of multi-energy solutions to reduce CO2 emissions across much of its activity - including the recording, production, distribution, and promotion of songs and artists, as well as training the next generation of music executives.

WM Spain is exploring ways to lessen the environmental impact of its artists' tours. As part of this effort, they will be introducing renewable fuels for domestic travel in partnership with Repsol. These fuels offer the potential for considerable CO2 emissions savings compared to conventional fossil fuels, based on Repsol's internal analysis. WM Spain artist, Dani Fernández is set to be the first artist to utilise this renewable fuel source on tour for all of his transportation.

Repsol will also supply 100% renewable electricity to The Music Station, Warner Music Group’s creative hub in Madrid, and the music venue Gran Teatro CaixaBank Príncipe Pío, both of which are located in Madrid’s former Príncipe Pio North Station. Last year, the venue attracted almost 400,000 visitors for almost 500 performances and events.

In The Music Station’s outdoor plaza, Repsol has developed a solar-powered canopy with phone charging stations for concertgoers and visitors. The canopy is equipped with six 310W solar panels offering green charging to the community. Warner Music Spain employees and artists visiting The Music Station can also use Wible, a carsharing service co-owned by Kia and Repsol, featuring 650 plug-in hybrid vehicles with zero-emissions labels.

Warner Music Group is committed to sourcing 100% renewable energy for all its global offices by 2030.

Warner Music Spain and Repsol’s partnership also includes a training plan for music industry professionals, with Repsol set to award 10 scholarships annually to students of The Music Station Academy, a Postgraduate course run by Francisco de Vitoria University and Warner Music Spain offering students the chance to learn from top industry professionals and producers. There will be four scholarships dedicated to the Music Industry and Business Programme, three for the Music Production and Artistic Programme, and three for the Video Production Programme. Additionally, a masterclass on sustainability in the music industry will be included in the Music Industry and Business postgraduate programme.

WMG has long been advancing environmental sustainability practices and reducing its environmental footprint, including a commitment to source 100% renewable energy for all its global offices by 2030. This commitment includes transitioning to renewable electricity sources like solar and wind power, improving energy efficiency in its buildings, and supporting initiatives that reduce WMG’s overall carbon footprint. Spain is the first country to achieve this 100% renewable energy goal.

In 2024, Repsol implemented various energy solutions at more than 80 cultural, musical, and sporting events in Spain and Portugal, positioning itself as a leader in decarbonisation strategies. Repsol’s partnerships with major music festivals such as BBK, Marenostrum, Sónar Lisboa, O Son do Camiño, Arenal Sound, and FIB underscore its commitment to transforming the energy landscape of large-scale cultural events by integrating sustainable, multi-energy solutions.

Guillermo Gonzalez Arevalo, president of Warner Music Iberia said, “Our strategic alliance with Repsol represents a key step in Warner Music's commitment to reduce emissions and minimise the environmental impact of our operations. Thanks to this agreement, we have been able to power our artistic hub, The Music Station, with 100% renewable energy, while providing our artists with the resources and partners necessary to reduce CO2 emissions during their tours. This joint effort reinforces our vision of a more sustainable future for music and the planet.”

Marcos Fraga, Repsol's director of communication and brand, added, “This agreement with leading record label Warner Music Spain confirms Repsol’s commitment to music and entertainment. Repsol can offer the music industry all the energy solutions it needs to reduce CO2 emissions.”
